Changes to Installation of Sprinkler Systems NFPA 13, 2010
Michael W. McDaniel, Ing., F Tech

There are many important changes that are taking place in the fire sprinkler industry and this is your chance to learn about them first.

Learning Objectives: The automatic sprinkler industry has seen some significant growth in the last few years in Mexico. We will discuss the most important changes and how they affect our industry. You will know what to look for in new fire sprinkler installations and design and where to find the information quickly in the new NFPA 13 layout.

High Rise Buildings-Design, Construction and Fire Safety Challenges
Robert E. Salomón, Gerente de la División de Códigos para la Protección Contra Incendios en Edificios y Seguridad Humana de la NFPA.

Since the concept of high-rise buildings emerged in the late 1800's, b uilding height measurements have gone from the number of stories, to how many feet to how many fractions of a mile a building might be.  As the height has grown, so have the challenges associated with protecting the occupants, the building itself and the first responders.  NFPA codes have developed both prescriptive and performance based design measures to address the height challenges, the fire loading and the use of novel facade assemblies that must be considered as part of the fire safety design approach.

Learning Objectives: Attendees will learn about high-rise fire events and timelines that triggered change; classification and application of the codes to such occupancies; use of performance-based design methods and alternative evaluation methods that might be utilized; development of an effective building emergency plan and occupant evacuation.

NFPA 101®, Life Safety Code®-Requirements for Day Care Occupancies and Centers--Sponsored by WOBO
Robert E. Salomón, Gerente de la División de Códigos para la Protección Contra Incendios en Edificios y Seguridad Humana de la NFPA.

In June of 2009, a horrific fire in Hermosillo, Mexico resulted in the deaths of some 44 young children. As with many fires in recent years that resulted in large numbers of fatalities (Evergreen Nursing Home-2003 USA; The Station nightclub-2003 USA) many of the features of the building design and configuration may not have been compliant with one or more code provisions. In addition, in certain environments, the response of the staff to an emergency is especially critical when the occupants do not have the full ability to evacuate under their own power. This session will look at the past incidents involving fires in day care occupancies and discuss the requirements of the 2009 edition of NFPA 101 as they relate to such facilities.

Learning Objectives: Review historical development of NFPA 101 Examine impact of fires in day care occupancies and changes to the code Discuss the function of the building construction, egress design, alarm & detection, sprinkler systems and staff response in protecting the occupants of a day care occupancy
